Family Rights and the Elderly: Striking the Right Balance Over the Lockdown

Thursday, 23 April 2020 - 12:00pm

On 21 April 2020, The Times published Lord Hope of Craighead's letter to the editor (in "Easing restrictions on over-70s and children" [link behind paywall]), which called upon government to strike a balance between public interest and family rights when considering the restrictions placed on the elderly who might remain in COVID-19 pandemic public health-related lockdown for over a year. Nigel Biggar offered a response to this call for balance with a challenge to consider the "need to determine the very meaning of a legal right to family life in our extraordinary circumstances."

Biggar's letter to the editor was published 22 April 2020 at The Times in "Striking the right balance over the lockdown" [link behind paywall; a complete copy of letter to the editor can be found here].
