Sunday, 22 September 2019 - 3:45pm

In his Standpoint feature essay (published 18/09/2019), Nigel Biggar analyses the problems raised by recent intemperate criticisms of his 'Ethics and Empire' project, explains their larger civic significance, and proposes some solutions. In particular, he challenges universities to take seriously the responsibility to promote the practice of intellectual virtues, so that graduate citizens will leave their alma maters capable of rational public dialogue about emotively controversial issues.
